Do you like taking pictures? Do you like growing roses? One of the most exciting (and least stressful) ways to participate in the local show is to try your hand at the photography division. You have to take the photos yourself, but you don’t have to grow or arrange the roses in the photos – what could be easier?

Your photos may have a border of up to 1 inch or they may be borderless- your choice they must be no larger than 5x7 - but they must be printed photo paper, no matted entries will be allowed.

Give it a try!
PHOTOGRAPHY DIVISION SCHEDULE

This competition is open only to amateur photographers. Only un-matted photographic prints, glossy or matte finish, may be entered. They must be 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 prints. Published photos or photos that have won previous awards are not eligible. The exhibitor must take the photos, but the photographer need not have grown the subject of the photo. The back of each entry must be labeled with the name and phone number of the exhibitor, the rose variety and the rose classification. Exhibitors are allowed up to 3 entries in each of the flowing classes:

  • Class 1 – single rose in exhibition stage. The form must be that typical of the variety; hybrid tea form begins with a high - pointed center with the petals unfurling in a symmetrical spiral form; rose must be named
  • Class 2 – Single rose fully open. The stamens must be showing; the rose must be named
  • Class 3 - Rose spray. The overall shape and configuration of the spray along with the individual florets will be considered in judging. A spray is two or more roses on the same stem. The rose must be named
  • Class 4 – Garden Photo – Any garden counts!!! You do not have to feature roses.
  • Class 5 - Critters in the Garden -- critters can be insects, butterflies, pets, etc. The critter must be readily visible.

  • Class 7 - Abstract picture - a picture of a rose which has been altered by using a computer

  • Helpful Hints for Rose Show Photography
Following are “Guidelines or helpful hints for photographers planning to enter their photos in a rose show:
  • 1. USE A TRIPOD. When photographing blooms close up, the slightest movement can blur the picture.
  • 2. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Avoiding extraneous or distracting elements will give your pictures focus and draw attention to your subjects
  • 3. USE A BLACK CARD. Whenever possible, put a black card behind the bloom(s) you are photographing. Such a background will make the bloom(s) dramatically stand out.
  • 4. GIVE YOUR SUBJECT SOME AIR. Try not to cut off or crowd the subject being photographed unless you’re doing it for some artistic reason.
  • 5. MAKE YOUR SUBJECT THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. Blooms centered in your viewfinder usually look better than off-kilter subjects.
  • 6. MAKE SURE YOUR BLOOM IS IN GOOD SHAPE. Think Fresh
  • 7. BLOOMS LOOK BETTER OPEN. Rather than closed.
  • 8. INTERESTING LIGHTING CAN MAKE FOR INTERESTING PICTURES. Being able to creatively control the natural or artificial light you use can add mood and drama to your photos.
  • 9. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA. If you use a digital camera, shoot, look at it blown up (keep or dump), shoot, look at it again blown up (keep or dump) and continue this process until you’re happy with your shot.
  • NOTE: Guidelines are helpful, but they are NOT rules. The following is a list of the official rules
